The Lamplighter by Maria S. Cummins is an absolutely delightful story. I spent 8 weeks reading it aloud to the kids, reading a chapter per day. There were a few groans in the beginning, but very quickly we fell in love with Gerty and it became "READ MORE MOM!". Written in the mid 1800's, the language will take some getting used to, particularly if you haven't read and/or been exposed to classic literature. However, it is so worth it to stick with this book and watch Gerty blossom into a beautiful young woman. I will not give away the ending, but encourage you to give it a try :)
