The K'nexted Mind
Dear Ruben.....I love to watch you build. The way you start with a pile of pieces and turn them into helicopters, trucks and trailers, tractors, 4-wheelers, and Christopher Columbus's ships.
Though you cannot read words on the page, you study books and build great things. Some say, there is a disconnect in the dyslexic mind. I say, God has given you a gift. May you run with it and do great works for Him....

Germany
We were so fortunate to be able to access a kit from Germany through the MORE Online Public Library System in WI for our Galloping the Globe study. The kids really enjoyed the hands on of seeing actual artifacts from Germany.
There were many books, including a book on German Proverbs, candies, a German Memory Game, a doll, a stein, a McDonald's place mat in German, toys, money, and more.

The End of Term One 2012-2013
We are all excited about finishing our first term of the 2012-2013 school year. Next week will be our break. We are schooling three twelve week terms again this year with 12 weeks on, one week off. It seems we've had more struggles than usual. I've adapted and changed curriculum for several subjects. You can see our original plan here. I've posted our actual plan below. This is the schedule for Riley and Ruben. Angel has a separate schedule. However, she does listen in on our read alouds.
The One Year Bible for Kids did not work out for us. This was a recommendation from Sonlight and Higher Up Further In (HUFI). Riley and Ruben didn't like the flow of it. They are familiar with the Bible stories and verses and didn't like when it skipped parts. So you'll note by the end of Week 3, we scrapped it and started reading from the regular Bible. I started in 1 Corinthians since we had studied Paul, but the kids struggled with this as well. The Farmer recommended reading Proverbs so that's where we've been since. We have one week left of Proverbs after the break. Then, I'm not sure where to go?
We also gave up on Parables From Nature, which is recommended by Ambleside and HUFI. I think this is a delightful book, but our reading aloud time was getting too long and I was losing the kids by the time I got to it. I decided to put it on hold for the rest of the term.
The Mystery of History Volume III is going well. We use it as a spine for history as we study the renaissance and reformation. I read aloud from it three days per week. Then we have discussion/narration. It's a good refresher for Angel. Riley also does a notebooking page for each topic. She's really enjoying this and likes looking back at her work. Here are some sample pages.....
I keep the Galloping the Globe schedule on a separate page that's not included here. We read a variety of books about the land, the people, the culture, missionaries, food, etc. Riley and Ruben color and label the map, color the flag, learn various geographic features, and make food from the region. We spend two weeks on each country. This is a continuation from last school year. You can see various posts regarding our geography study here.
Also, I did not keep specific timeline, map work, and activity notes on this plan. It's basically just a reminder when I look at my daily plan.
We are using Math-U-See for all the kids. I recommend this program.
I mentioned Nature Portfolio Throughout the Year here. This is just OK for us. It's serving a purpose, but neither Riley nor I are loving it. Again, if you need something planned for you, this is the way to go.
I read a chapter a week from The Burgess Animal Book for Children.
You will see the multitude of Language Arts going on between Riley and Ruben. Riley really likes her plan. After the first week she said to me, "I feel so grown up because I have a reading program." It was great! Drawn Into the Heart of Reading is good in that it gives you book ideas and encourages the student to try different genres. However, the majority of the activity book is not necessary in a homeschool setting. It seems like busy work. We have daily discussion, which leads to narration. I prefer the Socratic Method or Charlotte Mason instead of workbook. I highly recommend The Heart of Dakota Book Shop though. It's a great place to get book ideas and run with them.
We are loving the All About Learning Press subjects! Riley is using All About Spelling Level 2 and Ruben is using All About Reading Level 1. It's slow going, but we are making progress. Ruben is also following Getty Dubay Handwriting.
I've read a plethora of books aloud. I think I'll post them at another time. I've been negligent on poetry this year, which is unfortunate because the kids have enjoyed it in the past. Unfortunately, I'm finding there's only so much time in the day and with the birth of Levi, that time has been limited.
Also, we have not done much in the way of extra curriculars. I am reading aloud The Fallacy Detective, primarily for Angel's benefit, but Riley is loving it. We have studied artists and composers while "Galloping the Globe" through Europe. Our kids are very active and love the outdoors so they are getting plenty of fresh air. I suspect we'll do more handicrafts as winter blows in.
