Patty Reed's Doll by Rachel K. Laurgaard is the story of the "Donner Party", a group of pioneers stranded in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter of 1846. The party was traveling west from Springfield, Illinois to Sutter's Fort, California when they were trapped by heavy snows for months without food. Many of them died, but little 8-year old Patty Reed survived. Patty secretly carried a special friend along the way, a tiny wooden doll she called "Dolly". The book is Patty's story as told by Dolly.
Patty Reed's Doll is a wonderful account of the true life experiences pioneers faced. Laurgaard pieced together Patty's story from letters, journals, and stories told by the Donner survivors. I learned, laughed, and cried. There were many moments where the kids sat on the edge of their seat waiting to see what would happen. There is a map at the beginning of the book that we copied and pasted into the kid's notebooks so we could follow along on the journey. There is also a photo of Dolly, who today, sits in a glass case at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park in Sacramento, California.
I highly recommend Patty Reed's Doll if you are studying the Donner Party, Westward Expansion, California, or just looking for a good read. The book is recommended reading for Beautiful Feet's History of California guide and TruthQuest history. Below are samples of the kid's notebook pages that accompany Patty Reed's Doll....
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” -Ephesians 2:8,9

Trail of Tears....
Trail of Tears by Joseph Bruchac is an easy reader I chose as a brief overview of the Cherokee Nation migration in 1838. As white settlers moved west, the Cherokee Tribe was forced from their land. They traveled 1,200 miles to Oklahoma. In the photo above, you can see Riley's map which she chose to draw to accompany her copywork.

Andrew Jackson....
Andrew Jackson was my first Clara Ingram Judson book. The kids chose it and I'm glad they did!
"Tall as a man at fourteen, fiery, red-headed Andrew Jackson served under his uncle, Major Robert Crawford, in the Revolutionary War, and later was captured by the British. The war over, he moved "Up-West" with many other Americans who sought new homes and opportunities on the opening frontier. "Old Hickory" was always a fighter, and this story of his adventurous career is exciting reading." - from the opening end paper
Judson tells the amazing story of Andrew Jackson, which reads like an adventure novel. The first president born in a log cabin, he fought in the Revolutionary War, was captured by the British and then was orphaned, all by age sixteen. Reared into manhood by his uncles, he went on to become a frontier lawyer, a general, and a judge before becoming the seventh president of the United States. He survived two bullet wounds and the mark of a sword blow to his forehead.
Jackson married Rachel, the love of his life, who died of a heart attack three weeks before he won the presidency. Though they had been married more than thirty years, the scandal surrounding their marriage was ammunition for Jackson's opponents. His was an era "when political cartoons came of age".
Although Jackson was crude in many ways, he has become one of the greatest presidents of all times. He was loved and respected by the common people. In Judson's Forward, she says, "Looking back across the pages of United States history, five men stand out uniquely as great Americans - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. Their lives span the years from our beginnings to the first World War, and each man in his own way made a distinguished contribution in the American struggle toward a land for the free." Judson's story of Andrew Jackson, also known as "Old Hickory", shows his many contributions to this great nation.
Also, if you are looking for a picture book to teach younger children about Andrew Jackson, I highly recommend Robert Quackenbush's Who Let Muddy Boots Into The White House?, A Story of Andrew Jackson. This lively biography covers Jackson's life in an easy to read format. The last line of the Epilogue reads, "His faults were many, but he loved his country simply and with all his heart." I think this is a great summary in the life of Andrew Jackson, who fought so passionately for the cause.
I'm using Andrew Jackson as my Classic with a Name in the Title for the 2015 Back to the Classics Challenge.

Trail of Apple Blossoms....
Trail of Apple Blossoms by Irene Hunt is a fabulous account of John Chapman, AKA Johnny Appleseed. It is not a biography of Chapman, though some events are said to have really happened. Rather, it's a story of good deed, putting others before self, and overall love. This 1968, out-of-print book is a wonderful story of Chapman's character. I became emotional at several points throughout the book. Both Riley and Ruben told me more than once that they really loved this story. We give Trail of Apple Blossoms two thumbs up!

Term One Review - Including Book List 2014-2015
After having some minor panic attacks from feeling overwhelmed while planning last summer, I decided to cut back on the number of books we read per term. Instead, I'm working hard on choosing the best of the best. There really are many great books and a part of me still longs to read them all...ha! However, I was starting to feel burn out and that's a bad feeling!
Thankfully, our kids' favorite subject is still history and I want to continue to fuel that passion. I believe Beautiful Feet, TruthQuest, Veritas Press, and Sonlight can take much of the credit for this. Their book lists/suggestions haven't let us down. I will continue to pick and choose from their recommendations. Here were our 2014-2015 Term 1 read aloud picks...
The Story of Eli Whitney by Jean Lee Latham
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham
Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin by Marguerite Henry
A Head Full of Notions by Andy Russell Bowen
The Year of the Horseless Carriage by Genevieve Foster
The Louisiana Purchase by Gail Sakurai (Cornerstones of Freedom)
Open the Door to Liberty by Anne Rockwell
Diary of an Early American Boy by Eric Sloane
The Lewis & Clark Expedition by Richard L. Neuberger
The Story of Sacajawea, Guide to Lewis and Clark by Della Rowland
The Lewis and Clark Expedition by Peter F. Copeland (Dover Coloring Book)
My Name is York by Elizabeth Van Steenwyk (wonderful picture book about William Clark's slave)
The War of 1812 by Rebecca Stefoff
Old Ironsides: Americans Build a Fighting Ship by David Weitzman
James Madison by Mike Venezia (Getting to Know the U.S. Presidents)
Abigail's Drum by John A. Minahan
Cornstalks and Cannonballs by Barbara Mitchell
The Star Spangled Banner by Peter Spier
By the Dawn's Early Light by Steven Kroll
Samuel F. B. Morse: Artist - Inventor by Jean Lee Latham
Pioneer Plowmaker: A Story About John Deere by David R. Collins
Mill by David Macaulay - (We started this, but will not finish it at this time. The kids simply were not interested....and that's OK. Every now and then this happens. We usually make an honest attempt, but there are so many great books that I don't push through something they are not ready for.)
We are also doing our notebooks a little different this year. Rather than printing pages of activities, copywork, and coloring pages, I've resorted to composition notebooks. I do print an occasional page, but for the most part, Riley and Ruben create their own drawings. Copywork is taken from our reading. We like the way they're turning out....
After finishing our first twelve weeks of the 2014-2015 school year, we are taking a break this week to refresh, give thanks, and reevaluate our curriculum. Stay tuned for a few changes I am making....

Studying Lewis & Clark with Beautiful Feet....
Last year, we started Beautiful Feet's Early American History for Intermediate Grades. I used it primarily for RileyAnn and then used the Primary Grades guide for Ruben. Because we ended our history study with the American Revolution, we didn't finish the guides. So this year, I'm picking up our history study with Lewis & Clark, finishing up the Intermediate Guide with both, Riley and Ruben.
I really love Beautiful Feet Study Guides. The simplicity of the open and go especially attracted me back this year. Yet, the intellectual stimulation is far from simplistic. The guides provide map work, narration opportunities and copywork. The questions are thought provoking. And, the book choices are absolutely fabulous!
A couple of the suggested books we read while studying Lewis and Clark were The Story of Sacajawea, Guide to Lewis and Clark by Della Rowland and The Lewis and Clark Expedition by Peter F. Copeland. The later is a Dover Coloring book, which I used to pull copywork from. The kids also used the illustrations for inspiration in their notebook drawings. Copeland's book is a TruthQuest History recommendation as well.
Rowland's book tells the story of Sacajawea while she served as guide to The Corps of Discovery beginning in 1804. It's quite amazing to think she was only sixteen years old when she set out with Lewis and Clark on their journey, with an infant on her back. The Story of Sacajawea... provides an excellent over view of the expedition, throughout which, Sacajawea shows real strength and courage.
Here are a few of Riley and Ruben's notebook pages covering this subject...

Well they say, "better late than never" and that's the way I feel about this book list. Spring came and went so fast with graduation. Because the topics were so closely related, there was not a clear dividing line. The books with asterisks (**) indicate books we did not read fully, rather we referenced or read sections from them. You can view Term 1, Exploration, here and Term 2, Colonial America, here.

I would like to continue this time period with the following resources, but not sure how time will permit....

Roanoke & Virginia Dare....
I just finished reading the Childhood of Famous American book Virginia Dare: Mystery Girl by Augusta Stevenson aloud to the kids. We were studying the Lost Colony of Roanoke. This is a wonderful story! We love Childhood of Famous American books! Our kids have read several. This particular book was hard to find. Our library system doesn't have a copy. I was very thankful to borrow it from a fellow homeschooler. I highly recommend it if you can locate a copy.

I usually have the kids complete a notebooking page or coloring sheet for various people, places, and events that we learn about. Sometimes they create their own and sometimes I print things I find online. Today, I found this wonderful vintage coloring book on The Lost Colony.

I printed it and bound it with our ProClick Binder. It's too cute! I wish they still made coloring books like this. We just used one page of it. I copied the page and put handwriting lines beside the picture. The kids then copied a couple of sentences about Virginia Dare and Roanoke on the lines. We like the way they turned out.

The End of Term One 2012-2013
We are all excited about finishing our first term of the 2012-2013 school year. Next week will be our break. We are schooling three twelve week terms again this year with 12 weeks on, one week off. It seems we've had more struggles than usual. I've adapted and changed curriculum for several subjects. You can see our original plan here. I've posted our actual plan below. This is the schedule for Riley and Ruben. Angel has a separate schedule. However, she does listen in on our read alouds.
The One Year Bible for Kids did not work out for us. This was a recommendation from Sonlight and Higher Up Further In (HUFI). Riley and Ruben didn't like the flow of it. They are familiar with the Bible stories and verses and didn't like when it skipped parts. So you'll note by the end of Week 3, we scrapped it and started reading from the regular Bible. I started in 1 Corinthians since we had studied Paul, but the kids struggled with this as well. The Farmer recommended reading Proverbs so that's where we've been since. We have one week left of Proverbs after the break. Then, I'm not sure where to go?
We also gave up on Parables From Nature, which is recommended by Ambleside and HUFI. I think this is a delightful book, but our reading aloud time was getting too long and I was losing the kids by the time I got to it. I decided to put it on hold for the rest of the term.
The Mystery of History Volume III is going well. We use it as a spine for history as we study the renaissance and reformation. I read aloud from it three days per week. Then we have discussion/narration. It's a good refresher for Angel. Riley also does a notebooking page for each topic. She's really enjoying this and likes looking back at her work. Here are some sample pages.....
I keep the Galloping the Globe schedule on a separate page that's not included here. We read a variety of books about the land, the people, the culture, missionaries, food, etc. Riley and Ruben color and label the map, color the flag, learn various geographic features, and make food from the region. We spend two weeks on each country. This is a continuation from last school year. You can see various posts regarding our geography study here.
Also, I did not keep specific timeline, map work, and activity notes on this plan. It's basically just a reminder when I look at my daily plan.
We are using Math-U-See for all the kids. I recommend this program.
I mentioned Nature Portfolio Throughout the Year here. This is just OK for us. It's serving a purpose, but neither Riley nor I are loving it. Again, if you need something planned for you, this is the way to go.
I read a chapter a week from The Burgess Animal Book for Children.
You will see the multitude of Language Arts going on between Riley and Ruben. Riley really likes her plan. After the first week she said to me, "I feel so grown up because I have a reading program." It was great! Drawn Into the Heart of Reading is good in that it gives you book ideas and encourages the student to try different genres. However, the majority of the activity book is not necessary in a homeschool setting. It seems like busy work. We have daily discussion, which leads to narration. I prefer the Socratic Method or Charlotte Mason instead of workbook. I highly recommend The Heart of Dakota Book Shop though. It's a great place to get book ideas and run with them.
We are loving the All About Learning Press subjects! Riley is using All About Spelling Level 2 and Ruben is using All About Reading Level 1. It's slow going, but we are making progress. Ruben is also following Getty Dubay Handwriting.
I've read a plethora of books aloud. I think I'll post them at another time. I've been negligent on poetry this year, which is unfortunate because the kids have enjoyed it in the past. Unfortunately, I'm finding there's only so much time in the day and with the birth of Levi, that time has been limited.
Also, we have not done much in the way of extra curriculars. I am reading aloud The Fallacy Detective, primarily for Angel's benefit, but Riley is loving it. We have studied artists and composers while "Galloping the Globe" through Europe. Our kids are very active and love the outdoors so they are getting plenty of fresh air. I suspect we'll do more handicrafts as winter blows in.
