Along the Santa Fe Trail, Marion Russell's Own Story by Marion Russell/Adapted by Ginger Wadsworth is a wonderful picture book describing 7-year old Russell's 1852 journey from Kansas to California over the Santa Fe Trail. Much of the text is taken from Marion Russell's biography, Land of Enchantment: Memoirs of Marian Russell along the Santa Fe Trail. Wadsworth's adaptation gives younger children a taste of life on the trail in the mid 19th century. James Watling's illustrations add real value to an already marvelous story.
Prior to reading Along the Santa Fe Trail, I read aloud The Santa Fe Trail by Judy Alter. This Cornerstones of Freedom book gave us great historical background information on the trail, how it came to be, and the importance of the trail bringing the Southwest into the United States.
